Home Outreach Conferences Fatigue and Fracture Conference

Lehigh University’s Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center organized the Second International Conference on the Fatigue and Fracture in the Infrastructure. The conference, held July 26 through 29, 2009 at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, brought together experts in the field of fatigue and fracture of the civil infrastructure. Over 140 owners, engineers, researchers, and industry leaders presented and discussed recent experiences, effective retrofit strategies, new material applications, monitoring, evaluation and maintenance approaches, and educational issues and needs. The conference included specific seminars entitled “An Introduction to Fatigue and Fracture in the Infrastructure – A State of the Art Overview”, “Fatigue Design of Highway Sign, Luminaire, and Traffic Signal Structures”, and “Evaluation and Enhancement of Steel Bridges Against Fatigue and Fracture Limit States”. Additionally, the conference included 3 keynote plenary sessions and 11 breakout technical sessions.

Dr. Sougata Roy, ATLSS Senior Research Scientist, served as the conference’s Organizing Committee Chairman. Dr. John W. Fisher, ATLSS Emeritus Director, served as the conference’s Honorary Chairman. The conference’s organizing committee was comprised of several ATLSS faculty and staff members in addition to Dr. Roy and Dr. Fisher, including ATLSS Director and Joseph T. Stuart Professor of Structural Engineering Dr. Richard Sause, ATLSS Deputy Director and Bruce G. Johnston Professor of Structural Engineering Dr. James Ricles, ATLSS Administrative Director Dr. Chad Kusko, Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering Dr. Dan Frangopol, Emeritus Professors Dr. Ben Yen and Dr. Alan Pense, Peter Bryan, and MaryAnn Cahalan.

Several organizations participated in the conference as technical exhibitors, including Applied Technical Services, Inc., Applied Ultrasonics, Inc., the ATLSS Engineering Research Center, Campbell Scientific, Inc., Direct Measurement, Inc., Mistras Group/Physical Acoustics, URS Corporation, and WavesInSolids, LLC. Additionally, the following organizations participated in the conference as financial sponsors: Federal Highway Administration, Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance, Campbell Scientific, Inc., Acrow Corporation of America, AECOM, Modjeski and Masters, Parsons Transportation Group, Weidlinger Associates, Gannett Fleming, Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., and High Steel Structures.
